Abstract

Shale gas is an increasingly important energy source, but its extraction and processing can have significant environmental impacts. Sustainable practices in shale gas processing are crucial to minimize these impacts and optimize the potential benefits of shale gas in a low-carbon energy system. This article provides insights from Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and examines the environmental impacts of shale gas processing, compares these impacts with other fossil fuels, and discusses sustainable practices that can be implemented to reduce these impacts. The article also reviews successful case studies of sustainable shale gas processing and explores challenges and potential solutions for adoption of sustainable practices. Finally, emerging technologies and trends in sustainable shale gas processing are discussed, along with the potential role of shale gas in a transition to a low-carbon energy system. A call to action is made for industry stakeholders, policymakers, and consumers to prioritize sustainability in shale gas processing and work towards a more sustainable and responsible energy future.
