Abstract

This paper investigates the effect of Carbon Nano Tubes (CNT's) on the mechanical, physical properties, corrosion of embedded steel bars, and microstructures of cement mortar. In the experimental program, several mixes containing cement, natural sand, water, and CNT's with percentages 0%, 1%, 2%, 3%, 4%, and 5% by weight of cement as an addition were tested. The compressive strength of cement mortar, sorptivity coefficients, corrosion rates of embedded steel bars, and microstructure were investigated. The results showed that the using of the CNT's had modified some properties of cement mortar such as increasing the compressive strength of cubes about 23% at 4% CNT's addition. Increased the resistance of corrosion and decreased the porosity of cement mortar. Also, scanning electron micrographs showed that real interaction between carbon nanotubes and cement matrix was created with carbon nanotubes acting as filler resulting in a denser microstructure and higher strength.
