Abstract

Homelessness remains a pervasive social issue, affecting marginalized populations across the globe. This abstract delves into the specific context of homelessness among women in Chennai, a burgeoning metropolis in India. This study delves into the daily struggles faced by homeless women in Chennai, shedding light on their unique experiences, vulnerabilities, and coping mechanisms in an urban environment. It also examines the steps taken by the government which includes night shelters and also examines the effectiveness of the same. The consequences of homelessness for women encompass a wide spectrum, including exposure to violence, early marriages, repeating cycles of poverty and homelessness etc. The study highlights the need for holistic interventions to provide these women with not just shelter but also pathways to rehabilitation, skills development, and empowerment. In conclusion, the homelessness of women in Chennai is a multifaceted issue that demands concerted efforts from various stakeholders, including government bodies, non-governmental organizations, and the broader society. This research aims to remove preconceived notions about homeless women and aims to contribute to a better understanding of the challenges faced by homeless women and to advocate for targeted strategies that can uplift and reintegrate them into society. By addressing the unique needs of homeless women in Chennai, it is possible to work towards a more inclusive and equitable urban landscape for all.
