Abstract

The present investigation is carried out for the production of Alternative fuel (biodiesel) from corn oil with an active and promising homogenous catalyst KOH via Transesterification process. The conversion of corn oil to fatty acid methyl ester was influenced by reaction conditions such as molar ratio of methanol to oil, catalyst loading, reaction time and temperature. The optimum results shows that for 15:1 methanol/oil molar ratio, 5 wt% homogenous catalyst at 65° C for 180 min reaction time gives a maximum yield of 97 %. The processed biodiesel was characterized and compared with petroleum fuels as per ASTM standards.
