Abstract

This paper conducts a comprehensive literature review to explore celebrities' concept, influence, and categorisation, focusing on their impact on social movements and the ongoing conflict in Gaza. This literature review explores how celebrities can particularly positively influence the world and push it to focus on the War on Gaza and the importance of Palestinians' rights. This review synthesises various scholarly perspectives about celebrities' role in a social movement using their social media platforms. The researchers study the challenges and consequences that certain celebrities are facing due to their stand with the Palestinians and for consistent calls for a ceasefire in Gaza. The authors argue that celebrities can not stand neutral in a genocide like the one happening in Gaza since October 2023 as they are supposed to be connected with their culture, driven by media and public interest, and be part of the common societal experience. Celebrities are also expected to be part of parasocial intimacy and to be influential voices in public discourse. The paper illustrates the significant role of social media in amplifying the influence of celebrities, particularly in the advocacy of social movements supporting Palestinian rights and the genocide in Gaza, noting the professional and personal repercussions faced by those who take a stand. The researchers conclude with an examination of the expectations placed on Arab celebrities to advocate for Palestine and the broader implications of celebrity activism in shaping and sharpening public opinion and social justice movements.
