Abstract

Background: Public health uses epidemiology discipline to diagnose and study the effect of factors on community health problems, producing information useful for the management of health services and programs. The competence of public health professionals depends on his/her knowledge, skill, ability, culture, organization, and strategy of human resources management to complement each other. Therefore, to achieve competence, public health science needs a field epidemiological laboratory. The objective of the present article is to clarify the need for public health science discipline integration in the establishment of professional education through a public health field laboratory based on epidemiology.

Method: To conduct a literature study producing public health science discipline integration, field laboratory based on epidemiology, and professional education Result: The epidemiology discipline itself will not solve community health problems directly. However, epidemiology gives information to health policy & administration discipline concerning the management of health services through health promotion discipline to motivate and actuate other public health disciplines solving the problems of communicable and non-communicable diseases.

Recommendation: The School of Public Health establishes 1) a professional education program that uses the working area of the health center as a public health field laboratory based on epidemiology to produce professional generalists to be managers of health centers; 2) the postgraduate education program produces professional specialists or masters, who have public health knowledge, competency, and ability to diagnose a health problem and manage the integration, especially preventive and promotive health services; they will have a functional position at the health department of a district/municipality, province, and ministry of health, and do consultation among specialists by public health discipline.
