New technologies such as Artificial Intelligence and automation are rapidly changing the future of Industrial and Product Design (IPD) by altering the conventional design process. With robots taking up more and more of the repetitive work that people in organisations have traditionally performed, it is the expectation that the designers, among other people, will shift their practices to be more creative, strategic, and people-oriented. This paper identifies areas of knowledge and competencies relevant to preparing for design careers in this new world where AI is becoming more commonplace: computational sophistication in AI hardware and software, creative capabilities, human-centred design skills, data skills, and interprofessional collaboration, it discusses the social responsibility and the sustainability issues of AI-driven design and the transformation of design education in response to the new future work environment. By incorporating AI and automation in curricula, cultivating links with industries, developing ways to learn throughout life, and advocating good design, educators preparing for future careers are well prepared for technology-based environments. They are changing, though their responsibility to develop better, lasting, user-oriented products remains central to every design practice.
