Abstract

Hydroxyapatite Ca10(PO4)6OH2 is a kind of calcium phosphate. It is the primary inorganic mineral found in bones and teeth. In this research, hydroxyapatite was synthesized from inner core horns of cattle using a combination of alkaline hydrolysis and calcination methods. The synthesized hydroxyapatite was characterized by X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Scanning Electron Microscopy with Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (SEM/EDX), Thermogravimetric-Differential Thermal Analysis (TGA- DTA). The results showed that hydroxyapatite was produced with the Ca/P ratios of the synthesized powder above the stoichiometric value of the natural hydroxyapatite. The mean Ca/P ratio obtained from this research is 1.97 which is seen in the control sample, sample calcined at 650◦C and 850◦C.
